Rotary International
Rotary began on 23 February 1905, when Paul Harris gathered three business acquaintances in a Chicago office so that professionals from different trades could meet as friends and be useful to their city. It has not really changed since — clubs meet weekly, members come from different occupations, and the work is local.
What has changed is the scale. Rotary now spans more than 1.4 million members in clubs across most of the world, organised into districts, and funded for larger work through The Rotary Foundation, established in 1917.
Service Above Self
Rotary's motto since 1911.
The Four-Way Test
Written by Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 and adopted by Rotary in 1943, it is the ethical standard members hold their dealings to. Of the things we think, say or do:
- 01Is it the TRUTH?
- 02Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- 03Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- 04Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The seven areas of focus
Every Rotary grant and most Rotary projects sit inside one of these. They are why this club's work looks like other clubs' work in places it has never been.
- 01
Peacebuilding & conflict prevention
Training peace fellows and supporting communities in conflict.
- 02
Disease prevention & treatment
Health camps, screening, and the campaign to end polio.
- 03
Water, sanitation & hygiene
Clean water and sanitation, and the habits that keep them working.
- 04
Maternal & child health
Care that keeps mothers and children alive and well.
- 05
Basic education & literacy
Schools, teachers and the materials to learn from.
- 06
Community economic development
Vocational training and work that lifts a household out of poverty.
- 07
Environment
Rotary's newest area of focus, added in 2021.
Rotary has worked to end polio since 1985, when it launched PolioPlus. Cases of wild poliovirus have fallen by more than 99.9% since — the campaign is the largest single commitment in Rotary's history, and it is not finished.
Rotary District 3131
Rotary groups its clubs into districts, each led by a District Governor who serves a single Rotary year. Rotary Club of Pune University has belonged to Rotary District 3131 since it was chartered on 12 February 2003, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pune.
